Irish Coffee & a Headcold

Irish Coffee is a warming and tasty beverage spiked with Irish whiskey and topped with whipped cream.  Perfect for St Patrick’s Day!

With St Patrick’s Day coming up, I am trying to decide how to celebrate!  In my youth, this week was full of dancing and revelry, but now I may settle for a nice Irish Coffee!

I still remember the first time I tasted this classic drink.  I was a college student spending a semester in Dublin and firmly committed to the idea of β€œwhen in Rome…”

I lived with an Irish family in a beautiful old Georgian that had tons of character… and very little heat.  Our limited warmth came from electric sheets on the beds, a coal burning fireplace in the living room, and a couple of portable propane heaters.  It was cozy to belly up to a heater with a cup of tea and a good book, but I’ll never forget the October morning when I awoke to see my breath in my bedroom!

The result of the constant chill was that I spent the first month or so with a chronic case of the sniffles.  One night, on the verge of another head cold, I was attending a play at the famous Abbey Theater.  I expressed some concern that my condition might worsen and was given the same advice by everyone I spoke with.   Knock it out with a nice Irish Coffee, served up in the lobby.  Irish Coffee at the theater–how awesome!

Since this sounded like my kind of cure, I happily obliged.  It was a lovely, mellow evening. ic-vertical-2-a

The next day I awoke…  with a case of laryngitis so bad I could barely whisper.  So much for folk cures!

With Saint Patrick’s Day rolling around you might be in the spirit to partake!  So have an Irish Coffee to celebrate… or perhaps to relax.

Just don’t have one for its medicinal value.

    Hi Inger!
I hope you enjoyed your St. Patrick’s Day. There were parades in so many towns in PA this weekend. Unusual for me but oh so much fun since it was a nice day. However, Marion and I just watched a few minutes on the TV, lol…

Electric sheets? Is that like electric blankets? I adore Irish Coffee. I did a post a while back about its history. (I think it was invented at an airport:) I sure wish I had a nip right now, not for medicinal use either! Thanks for sharing, Inger…

You are right Louise–the electric sheets are like an electric blanket but it is the bottom sheet that is warm instead of the top. Makes in nice at night but that first leap out of bed is tough! I’ll have to take a look for your Irish Coffee post…

I don’t think it needs to be st.patrick’s day for me to enjoy this coffee. I can probably enjoy it all year long;)
PS: These pictures are so pretty!

I hadn’t thought of it in years, but I do believe I’ll need to indulge more often now. Especially if winter doesn’t go away soon πŸ˜‰

I remember travelling in Wales and staying with relatives – in September – and how very cold the houses were. No heat, and no electric sheets! This Canadian was a little embarrassed at how cold she got.
    Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I had to smile at the Wales trip Beth!! But you know the real surprise turned out to be when I got home in December. I was hot all the time (and we always kept the heat at 68)! I started constantly turning the heat down–my poor family must have wished I’d stayed in Ireland!

Mmm even I liked the taste of Irish coffee, despite my dislike for coffee in general πŸ˜›
Lovely flavour, and nice kick at the end!

    Cheers
