Essential Oil Recipe for Candles and More

Do you like easy crafting or just want a great smelling house without the chemicals?  Maybe an essential oil recipe for candles or lip balm? Then read on…

(Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links and I received the products free of charge in exchange for this review. But the opinions are my own.)

Did you know that many people recommend using candles (not just soap) scented with essential oils rather than chemical fragrances?  And made with soy or beeswax rather than (petroleum based) paraffin?  ‘Cause who wants to breathe phthalates and oil particulates?

Today I am crafting from my second shipment of an essential oil recipe box from Simply Earth. They offer a monthly collection of essential oils (plus extras) that help you make natural products like candles and lip balm easily at home. Last month, I had so much fun making soaps and a scented roll-on, that I was delighted to get the opportunity to do some more.

As a green blogger, I love having ready access to essential oils and easy recipes to use them. If you are careful about what your family uses, this is sooo worth looking into.

What’s in a box…

The October essential oil recipe box has a “candle” theme and contains the following:

  • Cassia Essential Oil (smells cinnamon-y!)
  • Orange Essential Oil (Sweet)
  • Balsam Fir Essential Oil
  • Focus Essential Oil Blend
  • Soy Wax
  • Two Lip Balm Container
  • Two braided candle wicks
  • Pre-printed labels

It also includes a half dozen recipes to help you use them (see below for what I’ve made so far).

October Box!

And every new subscriber gets an additional special offer–for free! It’s a bonus box with even more supporting products. Things like bottles and carrier oils that will help you make future recipes. My bonus box (received with my subscription last month) contained:

  • 6 small Amber Bottles
  • 6 Amber Roll-On Bottles
  • 1 bag of Beeswax Pellets
  • 2 oz. Jar of Solid Coconut Oil
  • 4 oz. Bottle of Liquid Coconut Oil
  • 4 oz. Bottle of Almond Oil

Bonus Box Even!

This brings the full value to over $150. All for the regular $39 box price (a deal in itself!).

Even better, for a limited time, I have a code that will get you $40 off on a future box. That means your first month is a great deal–and your second month could be free. How fun is that!

My Projects This Month and “Candle Therapy”

So far, I’ve made two candles for the family and a lip balm for my husband. We are getting to chapped lip season in Wisconsin (80’s yesterday, 50’s today—sigh!) and you can’t be prepared too early!

Making my first candle!

The recipes were easy and efficient, and it felt great not to have to do a research project before making something new!

You see, I’ve always wanted to make candles and actually took a local class once with my youngest. Well when my daughter burned her candle from the class, it lit up like a flame thrower, and set off the smoke detector (thankfully). Turns out the instructor put in too much essential oil, which can be flammable! I was so intimidated that I never made another candle—until yesterday. Thanks to Simply Earth (and tested recipes) for getting me to do something I really wanted to do!

Let harden for an hour

I should note that Simply Earth also sell refills (in reasonable quantities even!) in their online shop—which I’m pretty sure I’m going to take advantage of.  You need to supply your own containers so I cleaned out an old honey jar and used a small canning jar.

And as a bonus, my hands smelled wonderful all day. And after cleaning the wax melting dishes, it felt like I’d gotten a hot wax treatment!

So much fun I made a second candle!

The Company

Part of the motivation for the founders of this company was the challenge experienced sourcing good quality natural products. They comment:

With the safety of your home in mind, we’re meticulous about every step of our process. To make sure each plant reaches its potential, we carefully and ethically choose a region where it will thrive. Then we work with our farmers. When our plants have reached maturity, they are harvested safely and fairly. From there we collect their natural essential oils through either cold-pressing or steam-distillation. Every batch is then tested to ensure 100% purity.

I can personally attest to the frustration of thinking you were getting a great deal on a pure essential oil, only to discover (after delivery) that it was heavily diluted with a carrier oil.

Yes, Simply Earth is so confident in their quality they offer a 365 day guarantee! Plus they donate 13% of their profits to charity.

Balsam Fir for the (shhh) upcoming holiday season–and maybe a nice gift (the candle or the box)!

I’m so happy I successfully made candles. It was disheartening to have to throw out the little “candle torches” we accidentally made in the class. I’ll bet the juniper and vanilla scents are great!
