Homemade Beauty Products Book Review & Giveaway

Winter skin. Sigh… Now I wouldn’t exactly say I repress skin issues in winter, but honestly, I have barely looked at my legs in months.  Gotta love pants and dark stockings.  Of course, when the first warm days arrive (now!), it’s another story.

The Complete Guide to Natural Homemade Beauty Products & Treatments

The Complete Guide to Natural Homemade Beauty Products & Treatments

So I was delighted to receive a copy of The Complete Guide to Natural Homemade Beauty Products & Treatments: 175 recipes from Scrubs & Masks to Moisturizers & Shampoos.

All Natural.  Because, yes, I do try to be as careful about what I put ON my body as IN it!

Purple Crocus - Art of Natural Living

The author, Amelia Ruiz, “is a cosmetologist, an esthetician and the technical director of Fahle Ecolines, a distributor of natural and organic cosmetics.  She trained in Germany in the natural esthetic methods of the world-renowned Dr. Hauschka Skin Care.”  I couldn’t wait to break it open.

Now making homemade beauty products can run the range from mixing common ingredients in your kitchen to working with dangerous chemicals.  While once in awhile, I may go into my basement and make natural cold process soap, working with lye is not something to be taken lightly.  But the recipes in this book are very doable—as in, it might even be fun to make some with your kids!

The book includes recipes with step by step instructions for a wide variety of products and a variety of beauty needs —items for your face, hair, nails and body.  Options like Carrot Anti-Acne Mask, Nourishing Almond Oil Cream, Soothing Chamomile Toner, Herbal Lip Cream and Skin-Softening Milk Bath.

Thankfully for the casual “beauty cook,” most of the ingredient lists for these Homemade Beauty Products are short. Some are even doable with ordinary kitchen ingredients (peach, cornstarch, yogurt = Nourishing Peach Facial Mask!).  Others require just a few, easy-to-acquire, special ingredients like essential oil or beeswax. The instructions are also realistic, sometimes as easy as putting the ingredients into a jar and shaking.

Garden Poppies

Poppies from my garden (prior year!)

Take a look at the fun Rose & Poppy Bath above.  I have both of these flowers in my garden (you wouldn’t want to bathe in flowers sprayed with pesticides) and can’t wait until summer to give this a try!  I can just picture myself lounging in a deep tub with an herbal tea or glass of chardonnay surrounded by rosy cloud of floating petals!

ONe goal I have for the summer is to work on a front flower bed. By adding some berry bushes, I will 1) Get some exercise; 2) Get some sun (in a good way, not “laying out;) 3) Have some nice blue and black berries when the bushes mature.

I’d love to start using more natural products on my face! It would be great to learn how to make them myself.

I feel like this is a lowly goal, but I aim to start walking daily this summer. I’ve tried running, and I hate running so much that I quit within two months every time! I love to walk, though, so I figured that would be better than doing nothing, and I’m more likely to stick with it since I enjoy it. =)

My fitness goal is to get out hiking and swimming more this year. I recently overcame my autoimmune issues with the Autoimmune Paleo protocol and I’m just so excited to have the first summer in forever where I’m not laid up all day. 🙂

I love this! I have also focused my energy on monitoring what I put ON my body as well as in 🙂 My beauty goal is to find or make a version of a clean beauty tinted moisturizer or liquid/cream foundation. And for fitness, just to move more! Walking, biking, enjoying the summer weather in Wisconsin! <3 And of course I already follow you on Facebook! 🙂
