I had seen the designs for years. Chocolate mousse, decorated for Halloween, complete with gravestones. Yes, it was on my “to do” list for… forever!

Chalk up another goal achieved courtesy with a push from some blogger friends. It actually makes summer’s passing feel a little better.  Graveyard Chocolate Mousse is creamy chocolate mousse dressed up for Halloween complete with cookie gravestones.

The mousse, a rich chocolatey custard lightened up with fresh whipped cream, was actually quite easy. In fact the most challenging part was folding in the whipped cream so I didn’t have any little white pillows left. Graveyard Chocolate Mousse Styling

You’ve got to love all the cute Halloween designs that people do like this darling Hocus Pocus Cupcakes.

And styling chocolate mousse for Halloween made it really fun!

I used Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies for easy gravestones–just cut in half. Ultimately the biggest challenge in the whole project was writing the “RIP” on them. I tried melted chocolate at first, but it was hard to get it to a temperature where it would flow but not run.

Finally, my oldest suggested buttercream. She’s taken to baking a lot during Covid and is starting to develop some real skills. Since we only needed a small quantity of frosting, we decided to use a baggie with the tiniest hole cut in instead of a piping bag. She was nervous tackling the piping but in the end, the shakiest, creepiest, writing actually looked the best.

The Evaluation

The family thought that this was one of my best recipes in a long time. In fact, my youngest (aka my “picky daughter”) declared that chocolate mousse was her favorite dessert EVER.

The recipe came from Epicurious, but I simplified it slightly and cut it in half. There are far too many sweet treats coming our way to have extras right now!

Not that I’d eat two or anything…Graveyard Chocolate Mousse is creamy chocolate mousse dressed up for Halloween, complete with cookie gravestones.

Ingredients

Mousse:

  • 3 ½ oz fine-quality bittersweet chocolate not unsweetened
  • 1 cup heavy cream divided
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 ½ Tablespoons sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Garnish (optional):

  • 2 Milano cookies cut in half
  • 4 oreo cookies filling removed & discarded
  • 4 candy pumpkins
  • 1 Tablespoon chocolate buttercream see note

Instructions

  • Melt chocolate in a double boiler or metal bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring regularly until melted. Remove pan from heat but keep bowl on top to stay warm.
  • Whisk together 1/3 cup cream, eggs yolks, sugar, and a pinch of salt in a small saucepan. Whisk over medium low heat, stirring constantly, until it registers 160°F on thermometer, about 3-5 minutes. Strain mixture into a bowl and stir in vanilla and melted chocolate until well combined. Let cool until to about room temperature (I alternated putting into freezer for a few minutes, then whisking since I was in a hurry)
  • Beat remaining 2/3 cup cream until stiff. Fold one fourth of whipped cream into chocolate custard to lighten, then fold in remaining cream gently but thoroughly.
  • Spoon mousse into 4 dessert dishes or glasses and refrigerate for at least an hour.
  • To decorate for Halloween, twist and removed center filling of 4 oreo cookies. Crush wafer sections to form the graveyard “dirt” and sprinkle on top of chilled mousse. Cut the Milano cookies in half to form 4 gravestones. Put buttercream in a baggie and cut the smallest hole you can. Write RIP on the cookie halves. Set a cookie gravestone and cany pumpkin in each mousse serving.

Notes

There are pre-filled decorating tubes that might make the cookie decorating (writing RIP) process easier.

I love the way you did this but I have to say that it has been many, many years since I did anything special in terms of food or décor for Halloween! Mark and I somehow always manage to live where there are no children! However that will not stop me from trying your mousse! I have several recipes and more are always welcome!

My oldest has an October birthday, so she is major into fall decorating–some of which includes Halloween. I don’t think anyone is going to get a lot of trick or treaters this year, sadly…
