Halloween Pizza #HalloweenTreatsWeek
Tasty and fun, this easy Halloween pizza with fresh Mozzarella skulls is everything you could want in a spooky dinner or snack!

Last Halloween I bought a silicone skull mold. And it was possibly my best seasonal purchase. Ever!
You see this makes it super easy to create Halloween masterpieces like last year’s Halloween Caprese Crostini. And this year’s skull topped Halloween pizza.
Yes, if you can heat fresh mozzarella in a microwave then press it into a mold, you can make these skulls and become a spooky design artist.
And the whole dish is a snap to make. Just bake your favorite pizza (commercial or homemade), take it out of the oven, and set the skulls on top. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and you’re done.
Happy Halloween!

Why You’ll Love This!
Flavorful. You can always count on pizza for great flavor!
Easy. This is just a little harder than baking a frozen pizza!
Fun. Serve it for a Halloween pizza party and really get into the spirit!

Step by Step Overview
Microwave mozzarella balls and press into skull molds. Refrigerate until no longer moldable, then pop them out.

Combine the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar in a small saucepan and cook until syrupy.

Divide the pizza dough into two balls then form into 10-inch circles. Use a fork to make small holes to reduce bubbles.

Top with about 1/3 cup of pizza sauce and sprinkle with Italian seasoning (optional) and Parmesan.

Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella or provolone.

Bake at 400F until done, about 10-15 minutes, then arrange mozzarella skulls on top. Drizzle with balsamic syrup.

Tips & FAQs
I recommend making a few test skulls to perfect your skills. Then eat the worst 1 or 2 to keep your strength up.
The balsamic syrup both adds flavor and brings out the gruesome features of the mozzarella skulls.
How Do I Select a Good Pizza Sauce? I usually use a regional pizza sauce made in Chicago called Pastorelli’s that is thick and loaded with flavor. On a recent vacation I grabbed something else and found it thinner and less flavorful.
If that happens to you, you may be able to rescue it. Try adding Italian seasoning, garlic and onion powder, then simmer the sauce to thicken it.
Can I put the skulls on before I bake the pizza? No, they will melt in the oven and lose their shape. They’ll even melt some if put on a couple minutes before removing (ask me how I know this!). But when you put the skulls on after you remove the pizza from the oven, they will warm nicely from the heat of the pizza.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Halloween Pizza
Ingredients
Pizza (or use your favorite frozen pizza):
- 1 lb pizza dough (I used Trader Joes, or see my homemade pizza dough recipe)
- 2/3-1 cup pizza sauce
- 1 Tablespoon Italian seasoning or oregano, optional
- ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella or provolone
Halloween Topping:
- 8 ounce fresh mozzarella balls or slices
- ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar or honey or maple syrup
Instructions
Prepare the Mozzarella Skulls:
- You can decide how many you'd like to make--I think around 7 is a good number for a 10-inch pizza.
- For each Halloween caprese skull, microwave a mozzarella ball (or equivalent sized pieces) for 15 seconds (or until soft and lukewarm—microwaves vary), press into mold cavities in the skull mold. Mold should be approximately half full, not all the way to the top. Or if you’re using the very small pearls, place about 6 into each mold cavity, microwave in the mold and then press (these worked better microwaved in the mold for some reason).
- Refrigerate about 10-15 minutes until no longer moldable, then pop them out.
Prepare the balsamic syrup:
- Combine the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar in a small saucepan. Boil on medium heat, stirring occasionally until reduced by about half. It won’t appear syrupy when warm but will thicken noticeably as it cools.
- Keep warm enough to stay liquid so it can be drizzled when the pizza is one.
Make the pizzas (If using a frozen pizza bake according to package directions and skip to “Finish the Pizza”):
- Divide the pizza dough into two balls then form (I pressed rather than rolled) each piece into a 10-inch circle. Puncture the pizza dough in spots to reduce air bubble formation.
- Top with about 1/3 cup of pizza sauce and sprinkle with Italian seasoning (optional) and Parmesan.
- Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella or provolone, divided evenly between the two pizzas.
- Bake at 400F until done, about 10-15 minutes.
Finish the Pizza:
- When the pizza has finished baking, arrange mozzarella skulls on top. Drizzle with balsamic syrup.

That pizza looks like such a fun idea for Halloween! The mozzarella skulls are a clever touch, spooky, playful, and delicious all at once.
I love your tip to eat the ones that you’re not going to use “to keep your strength up.” Hilarious! I love the molded cheese so much!
Cooking is real work but it does have its perks!
WOW! These look scary and delicious at the same time. The dark balsamic drizzle definitely adds to the creepy factor.
