Tropical Sangria

With flavors of coconut, rum and orange, plus a profusion of exotic fruit, this Tropical Sangria is a tasty and refreshing summer wine cocktail.

Tropical Sangria

I admit it. When the weather starts to warm up, I’m ready for a fun cocktail–and the more festive the better!  The tipping point is usually Cinco de Mayo!

Now I love a nice Margarita as much as the next guy (hey, just check out my Frozen Strawberry Margarita or Festive Purple Margarita.).  But sometimes you gotta shake things up.

So this year I decided to make a Tropical Sangria. A white wine sangria that’s a little rummy and a lot fruity, it pulls together all the flavors of summer.  No matter what the weather!

Why You’ll Love This!

Flavorful. I was seriously impressed with the amount of tropical flavor I got just by adding a little Malibu coconut rum, orange-flavored Cointreau, and fruit (okay a lot of fruit).

Easy. This is super easy to make—just mix and pour. Or mix right in the glass. The hardest part is not eating too much of the fruit as you cut it.

Adaptable. I give directions for making this by the pitcher (about 6 servings), for making with a 375ml bottle of wine, or even by the glass. Just in case you want a Tropical Sangria and your husband wants a Diet Coke.

Fun. Nothing says fun like tropical flavors and fruit. But if that’s not enough, add a pink flamingo cocktail pick.

How to Serve

I recommend serving this in a large-ish wine glass so you have room for an abundance of fruit.

While it’s fine to use some temperate fruit (I added berries for the color), try to use at least some tropical fruit for the vibe. Tropical fruits could include pineapple, kiwi, dragonfruit, papaya, mango and so much more. Happily I found all of these in my small town grocery store!

I loved putting a starfruit slice on my glass as a garnish. But I also have pineapple and pink flamingo cocktail picks for another hint of the exotic. And I admit a cocktail picks can come in handy for spearing the marinated fruit!

Variations

Want to really ramp up the refreshing? Considering pouring a half serving, then topping with sparkling water or 7-up (diet or regular). This will create a spritzer-like drink that is especially hydrating on a hot summer day.

Prefer a red wine? Then take a look at my red wine sangria with apple cider and a fall vibe.

Tips and FAQs

It’s customary to recommend using a wine that you’d enjoy drinking on it’s own. But truthfully I used a wine I didn’t love and was delighted with the results anyway.

Ingredients

  • 750 ml white wine (regular size bottle)
  • 1/2 cup Malibu coconut rum
  • 1/2 cup Cointreau or Triple Sec or other orange flavored liquor
  • 12 ounces Pineapple juice
  • Tropical fruit a variety, in bite-sized pieces

Instructions

  • Mix ingredients in a large pitcher.
  • Serve in a wine glass or something similar, garnished with additional fruit if desired.

Notes

The calorie count is without fruit (since the choice is up to you).
If you want to make a half batch you can use a 375ml (half size) bottle, and cut all of the other ingredients in half.
For a single serving, combine ½ cup wine, 2 Tablespoons pineapple juice, 1.5 Tablespoons Malibu, 1.5 Tablespoons Cointreau.
And be aware that divided in sixths, this has almost two drinks worth of alcohol.  (To stretch, pour a scant glass and top with fizzy water or 7-up--and extra fruit of course.)
