Blending a rich creaminess with tart and sweet flavors, Strawberries with Sour Cream and Brown Sugar is perfect for breakfast or dessert. It was one of those times where I wonder if Iโ€™m old. Or a bad mother. Because, when I explained too my daughter that Iโ€™d be serving our strawberries with sour cream and brown sugar, she looked at me like I was from Mars. โ€œWeโ€™re out of creamโ€ I explained. This didnโ€™t help.

Of course, my mother didnโ€™t introduce this delightful combo to her kids either. We were well versed in โ€œstrawberries and cream,โ€ as a result of my grandparentsโ€™ Danish birthplace. But the only other option was plain.

Option: set out toppings and let guests help themselves

It was on a college dance trip, as a competitive Scottish Highland dancer, that I finally had my first taste. For one of the competitions, we stayed with a friend of the instructor. When she explained what our dessert would be my eyes grew wide. Count me in!

Or serve “put together”

Todayโ€™s exchange came about because, in the Covid era, there is no quick run to the store for an item or two. No cream, no half and half, no problem.

Rich and creamy, tart and sweet, the flavors in Strawberries with Sour Cream and Brown Sugar blend perfectly. So, to remind mothers and grandmothers to introduce the youth in their lives, I had to share today.

Cheese, bread and berries for breakfast

I also put out some cheeses that Iโ€™d had shipped from LaClare Family Creamery (did you know artisan cheesemakers are hurting now?) and some remnants of bread. Our breakfast was classic bohemian. And perfect.

So here it is. Not even a recipe, really. But not to be missed.

One did, the other preferred them plain, though she’s big on Strawberries and cream.

I canโ€™t remember the last time I bought Cool Whip, but I just picked one up this past weekend to freeze in case of whip cream emergencies. But Iโ€™ve got to try this sour cream brown sugar combo. It looks and sounds great!

When I was young, my friend treated me to dinner (okay, her father paid) at the Silverado Country Club in Napa. Or was it Sonoma? Well, anyway, the dessert was fresh raspberries with a brown sugar-sour cream topping and it has been a go-to ever since. Must try it on strawberries – thanks for the inspiration!

I think that is such a great idea – and I would try the combination. I keep boxed cream for emergencies and like you I am not just running to the shops each time we need something. My dad has his strawberries with black pepper and I love the savoury note it adds. Stay safe!
