This year we vacationed for a second time in beautiful Captiva FL.  Besides the sunny beaches, balmy weather and fun activities, it’s a wonderland of amazing local food.  Which inspired my Moon and Starfruit Salad.

Sanibel Farmer's Market

Sanibel Farmer’s Market

Nearby Sanibel has a Sunday farmer’s market that is amazing.  Seafood, dragon fruit, lychee.  Plus the stars of this salad, passion fruit, starfruit and blackberries.  I figure blackberries are like the new moon, which sheds no light so is perfect for star gazing!

Starfruit

You can see why it’s called Starfruit!

The star of the dressing, on the other hand, is the passion fruit.  If you are a Great British Baking Show fan, you have probably seen this featured in some of the recipes.  And the passionfruit dressing deserves adulation, with a flavor that has hints of citrus but is completely unique.

I was so excited to get to work with it there and have to see if I can get it at home too.  Last year I found starfruit at a local hispanic market so fingers crossed!

It is always fun to get a break from winter, especially someplace warm and beautiful!  Somehow thawing out even once makes everything better.

Back north again, the grip of winter is still upon us. But, maybe summer can feel just a bit closer with a hint of the tropics!

I don’t think I’ve ever had starfruit. I’m going to be looking for them now. Mom calls passionfruit lilikoi and she uses them all the time. I’ll share this with her as something to make with their lilikoi.

Such a beautiful salad, and I am so envious that you were able to get passion fruit! Ever since I was on Easter Island, where I had everything from cocktails to dessert made with passion fruit, I have been trying to find them. No such luck in Tucson! A funny side note – I was just looking at a list if food trends for 2020 and star fruit was first – because it is so Instagramable!

Wow, I’m a trendsetter. Whoda thought! If I go back next year, they’ll be more than 1 passion fruit in my suitcase home!

I’d be in heaven if I had regular access to all the produce at the Florida market!

I’m jealous of people who live in States where there are farmer’s markets year round. Whenever I am on vacation, I hit farmer’s markets too. It must be a blogger thing LOL.

We have them year-round in Wisconsin–indoors of course! It’s farmers with greenhouses, plus saved items. Interestingly we just went to an outdoor farmer’s market in NYC. It was so windy they couldn’t put up their awnings, but they had a lot of nice produce, bread, wine, meat, etc. I’m an addict now 🙂
