It’s really my father’s fault. He started delivering Valentine’s Day candy to his (adult) children many years ago. And when his grandkids came along, they got miniature boxes. Hand delivered with love. Talk about feeling special! When my father passed away in 2009, I couldn’t let the tradition go. And this year I included something new, Valentines Day Trail Mix!
Due to an uncommon family tradition, whenever I think of fondue, I think of New Year’s Eve. For years, instead of going out, we have celebrated quietly–with a holiday film and three fondues in front of the fire. Cheese and meat for dinner, then chocolate fondue for dessert! But fondue is too much fun to limit to just one night—and chocolate fondue is … Continue reading
Fresh mozzarella is all the rage. In salads, or appetizers, it can put a recipe over the top! But let me tell you about a special variety that really shines. It’s called Burrata–like in this Burrata with Roasted Strawberries and Red Wine Sauce. Now at first glance, a ball of Burrata looks at a lot like fresh mozzarella. But … Continue reading
‘Tis the season for all things pumpkin. And since one of my favorite anytime treats is scones, I decided to convert them to pecan pumpkin scones. Are you intimidated by scones? Well, trust me, there is no need to be. I learned to make them from my daughter-who-doesn’t-cook, and I have never (EVER) produced a rock-scone. Sodden bread, yes, brittle … Continue reading
If ice cream is made for summer, is fruit sorbet—like this Pear Riesling Sorbet–made for fall? Last summer I had a great time testing ice cream recipes from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home . I made a few from the book (like this chocolate), then took her how-to-avoid-hard-icy-homemade ice cream theories and started innovating (pumpkin anyone?). It was so … Continue reading
If you are a locavore, fall is the time to stockpile for winter. Buy a side of pork for the freezer, store some onions in a cool place and fire up the spare refrigerator for the extra carrots and beets. Then turn last season’s frozen egg whites into a Fall Colors Pavlova Meringue dessert. What? Yup, make dessert.
Pumpkin Ice Cream. It’s one of my favorite fall treats. Usually I head to Baskin Robbins, but this year I decided to make my own. I love the idea of controlling the ingredients in homemade ice cream. Organic cream, real pumpkin, NO carrageenan. And how many desserts have a full day’s supply of vitamin A?
A Drunken Chocolate Pear Tart—does life get any better? This fall I happened into a good supply of organic pears. Since organic pears can be hard to find, I was excited!
The last hurrahs of summer are upon us. With still-warm days, and hints of color, early September can be extraordinary, blending summer’s welcome with the flavor of fall. And if you happen to need an out-of-the-ordinary summer into fall breakfast, this Apple Dutch Baby Pancake may be just the ticket. A Dutch Baby Pancake, also known as a German Pancake, … Continue reading
I have a deep dark secret. I am an ice cream addict. Yes, treats like this deep dark chocolate ice cream have been sabotaging my diet all summer long. And I only feel so bad about it!
